Chloe Parker: Student

Hey everyone, I'm Chloe Parker and I'm 17. I live in Honolulu with my mom , older sister Hailey, younger brother Jude, and my grandparents. My Father pasted away two years ago because of complications with his heart surgery and it was a very though time for my family. Before my father pasted away life was easy, I didn't have to work because my dad spoiled us. But after he passed away he apparently owed a lot of money to the bank and we had to move out of our house in California. We went to go live with my mom's parents in Hawaii. I wish my dad was still here, but I know he is watching over the four of us and making sure everything will be alright.

After we were living in Honolulu for a few months I found a job at Classic Surfboards Hawaii and I am very proud that I am earning my own income and that I don't have to rely on others for money. I actually like Hawaii a lot better then California, this state is so much more laid back and the people here aren't so obsessed with becoming famous. I have took up surfing while I have been living here, it is very relaxing for me, and I have also started to like the outdoors a lot more. I really enjoy going to school at Maui High, the people there are really welcoming and always willing to help you out. One of my best friends also goes there Rosie Larson, and so far my junior year is going better then I expected.

Hey Chloe! I was wondering how you felt about schools banning certain books for specific reasons? I think that it is wrong that schools are banning certain books. It is totally unfair that some books cant be read in school. I looked up an author's opinion on it and i agreed with it " believe that censorship grows out of fear, and because fear is contagious, some parents are easily swayed. Book banning satisfies their need to feel in control of their children's lives" Judy Blume http://judyblume.com/censorship.ph

hey chloe!

did you hear the PTSA is thinking of banning some of the books we have read in school? they want to ban these books because of their content, often concerning sex, drugs, racism, or other potentially offensive subjects. what do you think the PTSA should do? in my opinion, i have no problem reading these books, but i wouldn't want my younger sister reading these books so she doesn't get any bad ideas. i would be in favor of not banning these books or imposing an age restriction on them...let me know what you think!

I feel that these books shouldn't be banned from our school, these books teach us about the real world and it isn't always a nice place. I think that the PTSA is trying to protect us from the horrors of the world, but most of us will be on our own soon and being aware of what it is really like, than to be ignorant about it helps us more in the long run.

Some of these books like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, teach us of the past and how our society has learned form their mistakes. "The books that the world calls immoral are the books that show the world its own shame"
Oscar Wilde. These books that the PTSA want banned are the books that should be read in school, so the teachers can help us understand it's true meaning, instead of us getting the wrong ideas about the book.

Hey Chloe,
I was wondering what your thoughts were about the PTSA wanting to ban all of those books. I think that all of the books are all appropriate for high school students. Although some of these books have violent or sexual themes, most of them can relate to themes many teenagers experience on a daily basis. I think that the books are essential in a high school students' education because they highlight themes that are happening throughout the world. What do you think about these books? Do you think some of them are too violent or too sexual?
