John Sanders- senior

Hi my name is John Sanders. I just moved to Honolulu from Washington State in September. I came here because I am a surfer. The waves are not as big in Washington. I am sponspored by Quicksilver, and they thought it would be better for my career if I could surf the big waves in Hawaii. I am a senior in high school. I really like spending my weekends on my surfboard. My surfboard is very cool and I can't surf on anything else. I love Hawaii, and I'm really glad I moved here. I have made many new friends. Since I moved here I fell in love with Ursula Lelukalani. We've been dating for four months. I like spending my time at the beach and hanging out with Ursula. She's a sweet girl. And totally my type. I will probably go to college here because many teams want me to surf for them. They think that I would be a good asset to their schools. I am pretty smart. My GPA is about a 3.2. I live with my mom and sister who also moved here with me. My sister is a freshman and is 14. She likes it here too. She spends her time laying out and getting tan.

Hey baby looking good, I can't believe the school year is almost over! Anyway, I was just looking at the note from the PTSA and I don't really agree with the parents on the bans of most of those books. Most of them I believe to be harmless including To Kill A Mockingbird and Huckleberry Fin, although some I believe should be read at an older age including Beloved and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. A couple of the other books I have not read, so I couldn't really say anything about those, but for the most part I think the books are harmless. The Kite Runner especially was my favorite and I'm so glad I was forced to read it for school, otherwise I wouldn't have read it and I wouldn't have realized what a great story it was. What do you think?

I was wondering what your thoughts were about the PTSA wanting to ban all of those books. I think that all of the books are all appropriate for high school students. Although some of these books have violent or sexual themes, most of them can relate to themes many teenagers experience on a daily basis. I think that the books are essential in a high school students' education because they highlight themes that are happening throughout the world. What do you think about these books? Do you think some of them are too violent or too sexual?

hey john!

did you hear the PTSA is thinking of banning some of the books we have read in school? they want to ban these books because of their content, often concerning sex, drugs, racism, or other potentially offensive subjects. what do you think the PTSA should do? in my opinion, i have no problem reading these books, but i wouldn't want my younger sister reading these books so she doesn't get any bad ideas. i would be in favor of not banning these books or imposing an age restriction on them...let me know what you think!

Thank you John,
You're right, I do not teach any classes that would have to deal with this issue, but I still feel the need to voice my opinion. I think these books give the students a good and realistic look at issues that every teenager inevitably faces. Taking away these books from our high school just limits the students and keeps them oblivious to issues they need to know about.
Thanks for listening.

Hey John,
Why don't we ever hang out, you are pretty cute. I mean we are both on TV! Hollywood would go nuts! Anyways I think the books are fine. We shouldn't be sheltered from things that are really happening in the world like in the Kite Runner and Perks of Being a Wallflower. Basically I think these books are totally fine. Even in Beloved, it shows peoples struggle to live as a runaway slave. These are real life situations that we would never know about if we didn't read books about them.
